Suffolk Athletics Marks the Retirement of Joe Mower

A presentation evening was held on Friday 27 February to mark the retirement of Joe Mower, bringing together friends, colleagues, clubs and officials from across Suffolk and beyond to celebrate a remarkable lifetime of service to athletics.

Joe first joined the Suffolk County AA committee in 1972, having already been an active official with Ipswich Harriers since the late 1960s. Over the decades that followed, his contribution to the sport has been extraordinary in both scale and impact. As a Level 4 official, Joe has worked at every level of competition, from local Sportshall and county cross country to Area and National Championships. His knowledge of the rule book, his calm authority, and his instinct for fairness have made him one of the most respected officials in the country.

His influence has extended far beyond officiating. Joe has played a major administrative role at county, regional and national level, serving as Chairman of Suffolk County AA and Eastern AA, Cross Country Secretary to the CAU, Championship Secretary to the English Cross Country Association, and Chair of the Run Britain licensing panel for the East Region. Many championships—county, regional and national—have run smoothly thanks to his organisation, leadership and sheer willingness to take on the work that others would consider impossible.

Joe has also been a mentor to countless officials and event organisers. Many in Suffolk and the wider region owe their progression, confidence and enjoyment of officiating to his guidance and encouragement.

The Association extends its sincere thanks to all clubs and individuals who contributed to Joe’s retirement collection. Their generosity has provided him with an engraved carriage clock, a garden bench, and funds towards a well‑deserved holiday. These gifts reflect the deep appreciation felt across the athletics community for everything Joe has given to the sport.
