What a fantastic year !

At the Anglian TF Suffolk won three team trophies and the aggregate trophy. At best in recent years we have managed to win single team trophies. I cannot remember the last time we won the aggregate trophy.

We knew from the level of interest and results that we would have a strong ESAA team. We didn’t expect to have 30 athletes reach  the Entry standard. The best ever before was 26 and that really was a long time ago, normally it falls just short of 20.

I had a call on the Friday night reporting a mixed set of results from the first day at the ESAA Championships, some disappointments among them. Not surprising since it can be a very daunting place to be.

By the end of Saturday’s events we had a delighted team and set of team managers. It must be our best year ever !

Suffolk achieved yhe following places :

2 x 1st     2 x 2nd      1 x 4th      4 x 5th      2 x 6th      1 X 7th       4 x 8th

that’s 16 top 8 finishes !! (without Harry Hughes who was representing GB elsewhere)

Add 10 more reaching finals means 26 of 35 reached their final !

Josh Hulse, who won the Junior Boys 800m, must have been phenomenal and so close to an ESAA Record.

In this very competitive atmosphere 11 of the athletes set new PB’s.

Michael Bartram recorded his second ESAA Steeplechase victory.

The Senior Boys team won the Cheshire Trophy by being the highest scoring Group B team.

This is a group of 17 counties of who have between 60000 and 100000 pupils in secondary education. Suffolk is at the 60000 end of this group.

When you include all 13 Group A counties (school population over 100000) then the Senior Boys result of 8th overall was outstanding.

Overall the Suffolk team was 5th in the group of counties. An excellent team spirit developed as these results came through and this in turn encouraged others to do well.

This year’s team was described by Mike McNeill (who is a National Coach and Team Manager) as outstanding in both behaviour and attitude on a par with the best he has experienced.

It helps too to have a great set of team managers and we certainly had that. :

Michael Fuller from Copleston

Mike McNeill from County Upper

Kate Alexander from Farlingaye

Colleen Fuller from Ipswich Harriers

Sam Cole from Copleston

When you add these results to the highly successful Cross Country season it has to be our most comprehensively successful year ever we believe.

Our thanks to the many schools who have supported the events we stage. Our thanks too to clubs like the Harriers and West Suffolk who do so much to enhance the abilities of youngsters who are attracted to the sport.

best wishes and thanks for your help this year.

An Email from Bruce Andrews 6th September 2016

This is an email to colleagues who are AA officials or teachers who already play a significant role in this association.

"Suffolk Schools cross country and athletics activities have never been as successful as they currently are. There is support for what we offer. What

is missing are signs that teachers want to get involved in helping run the Association to ensure it has a future. You cannot expect the current

officers to continue for ever"

Believe it or not that is a quote from a letter I sent to all Suffolk schools on the 24th September 2007. It could be said again about the present time.

Sadly nothing has changed and this year, somewhat inevitably, we are losing officers of the association in significant numbers.

Pat Scott is not well and is having to resign from the post of treasurer

Lesley Linden is retiring from teaching and thinks it is time younger teachers got involved in organising the excellent Team Athletics events we

stage for the Western Area Year 7 and 8 age groups.

John Yorke has done a great job in South Suffolk organising Team Athletics events for Years 7 to 10 but the pressure of other commitments (Head of PE,

family) has led him to ask to be relieved of this responsibility.

Michael Fuller, who has done an excellent job as lead Team manager, is moving to teach in London.

Finally I shall be resigning from the post of secretary. It is 14 years ago that I retired from teaching at Holywells. I have lived in North Norfolk for

the last 4 years. This association cannot continue in its present form. It is an appropriate time for me to go.

I have written twice to all schools indicating this situation but have not had a single response, comment or query.

To complicate things there are major changes in the financing of school sport.

For me personally this has been probably our most successful year ever at a time when we have really struggled to get teachers to help us at Anglian and

ESAA events.

It has been a very frustrating experience.

As to the future:

Either

1.      Suffolk Schools AA will cease to exist or a much smaller version may   emerge. The latter could lead to a decrease in numbers taking part and will

strengthen club athletes' involvement at the expense of school athletes.

2.      A variety of smaller roles are created in the hope that 'small commitments' will encourage enough people to get involved and so sustain the

Association at or near its current status.

It has always been my intention that what we stage offers all youngsters an even playing field (open to school and club based athletes) with incentives

to improve and clear objectives in mind. That will be undermined if we do not find long term answers to the problems we face.

You who are receiving this email are collectively and individually people I have been able to rely on and I again wish to thank you for that commitment.

We would not have survived without you.

Athletics will be less of a problem but Cross Country needs urgent attention. The most helpful thing as this time would be to have colleagues

who take responsibility for the paperwork involved in recording results of at best an age/gender group (eg Junior Girls). This would require 8 offers of help.

More realistically getting four offers would enable each age group to be covered (eg one person does all Junior events)

Tasks for each age group volunteer:

1.Take the Area results (of your age/gender group) away and produce results sheets for the first fifty in each race

2.Be prepared to accept emails or phone calls from runners who were ill, injured or underperformed and add their names to the results document which

also serves as a checklist for the first County Event

3.Adapt the list where necessary to ensure runners get the right numbers given to them at the first County event

4.Produce first fifty result sheet following the County

5.As 2 in preparation for the 2nd County Event

6.As 3 for the 2nd County Event

7.Produce a single sheet showing all results which are worth consideration for the selection process for the

    Anglian XC

8.Following the Anglian produce a similar selection for the ESAA.

It isn’t as much as it must look !It is spread over 6 months.

Of course there are other tasks which others will have to help with :

A.     Organising officials and First Aid

B.     Preparing letters for runners

C.      Preparing certificates and ordering medallions.

D.     Volunteers for Anglian and ESAA

Some of these can be included in the treasurer's brief. If you know of suitable candidates please let me know. Let me know the names and schools of any young teachers and other colleagues you come across.

Finally I get the impression that we will not be obliged to stick to teachers (as ESAA expects but doesn't get!) and that the association can include club and County colleagues within the association.

There are gaps in my understanding as to the nature of the new body which will oversee inter school and county school sport and some of the decisions

it has reached. I am not in agreement with some of those decisions. I recently attended the Suffolk Schools Sports Assn AGM which was most

unusually poorly attended. We were given documents there which ought to have been sent in advance to enable one to analyse them better. Unfortunately the

guy who has done much of the work was not present to explain the new procedures. There will be a meeting this term. There are major implications

for finance. Anglian and ESAA athletes will be paying significantly higher levies.

However my brief as Secretary runs out in October when we stage our AGM so while we are making personal approaches to other colleagues I felt it was important that you understood the situation.

Plans are in place for our first two events :

Area Championships at RHS on Thursday Oct 13th and regardless these will take place.
